Supervision
Professional coaching supervision is used to enhance the professionalism of the coach by providing them with:
- Continuous professional development
- Maintenance of professional and ethical codes
- Increased self-awareness
In essence supervision is where a coach meets with a more experienced and qualified supervisor, usually with psychotherapeutic training, to help them gain deeper insight into their ongoing work, in terms of the coach's own thoughts, feelings and behaviours when working with clients, as well as considering those of individual clients and also the overall organisational dynamics within which the individual is working.
It is also good practice for the coach to regularly experience the process of being coached, so they can maintain their understanding of what it feels like to be a client.
Over the past 10 years Liz has attended regular supervision meetings, both one-to-one and with groups of fellow coaches, facilitated by a qualified supervisor.
A clear description of Supervision is available on the website of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.
